Ensure that your plants are kept dry, and aerated daily. If you have excess moisture, this can attract bugs or diseases. Fungi commonly afflict a number of plants. Fungi can be controlled with fungicide sprays, but it is important to treat your area with the spray, before you see any problems.

Check your soil before you begin planting your garden. A soil analysis is inexpensive and can be used to figure out which nutrients should be added to provide a healthy garden environment. The cost of the analysis will be easily offset by the benefits of a healthy and vibrant crop.

If mildew is forming on your plants, you should not purchase an expensive chemical. Mix plain baking soda with a small bit of liquid soap and water. Then, spray this mixture onto all of your infected plants once each week till the mildew is gone. This method is not going to cause any damages to your plants and the mildew will go away slowly.

If you only have room for a small garden and want a fruit tree, consider planting a dwarf tree. Many areas only allow for small gardens, and that is where dwarf fruit trees fit in best. These little trees bear full-sized fruit within only 3-5 years. Plant these trees when they are still dormant, usually in early spring. Make sure they stay well-hydrated while they are taking root.

Try dividing the irises. You can get more irises by dividing the overgrown clumps. When foliage is dead, lift bulbous irises. The bulbs will naturally split in your hands, and after you replant them, will flower about a year later. Use a knife to divide the rhizomes. Throw out the center and cut pieces on the outside that are new. Every piece should contain a strong offshoot. Replant right away.

Spray old aftershave, perfume, or scented products around the grass of your garden to prevent your dog from entering it. This helps mask the attractive scents and can make your garden unappealing to them.

Try to curb a snail problem by mixing water and ammonia. You won't hurt your plants with ammonia, and it will actually be converted into nitrogen that is beneficial later. Ammonia will kill any snails that are wreaking havoc on your garden. Use the mixture daily for best results.

A good but unusual organic solution for weeding your plants is try "boiling" your weeds way. A boiling pot of water is one the best and safest herbicides you can find. Although this method is organic, it does pose a danger to your plants. If you pour the water near your plants, it will kill the roots.

Don't bother with expensive chemicals if your plants start to sport powdery mildew. Combine a bit of liquid soap and some baking soda with water. Once every week, you should spray the mixture on your plants; the mildew will disappear shortly thereafter. Do not worry about your plants; the baking soda cannot harm them.

Many times when digging in clay soil the clay will adhere to the shovel, which will make it much harder to dig. Coat and buff the digging end of the shovel with automobile wax to make digging easier. The clay will slide off of its surface and it will prevent rust.

Try "boiling" weeds to get rid of them. Boiling water is a very safe alternative to other potent herbicides. All you need to do is apply boiling water right to the weeds you want to get rid of. Be careful not to get any on the plants you want to keep. Boiling water is not good for the weed roots and will stunt further growth.

When you're dealing with a veggie garden, pest control may be difficult. Since your vegetables are meant to be eaten, refrain from spraying them with harsh chemicals. If you remain vigilant, you can control your garden pest population. When you catch a potential infestation early, the solution may be as simple as picking the pests off of your plants with your fingers.

Always protect yourself from the sun when you are outdoors working in the garden; you can do this by wearing clothes that will shield you from the sun. Wear sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. Protecting yourself from the sun will lower the possibility of sunburn and skin cancer.

An easy way to build up layers of plant materials for your compost pile is by putting the material in large plastic garbage bags. You can do this in the autumn once the leaves have been raked. A warm place is where your leaf bags should get stored. Now, when the springtime rolls around, you have some great material to mix in with your compost.

Make sure that you take time to properly plant any seeds that you buy. A key first step is to add moisture to your soil. Space the seeds at regular intervals to ensure that they won't be overcrowded as they grow. Seeds should be buried about three times deeper than their own size. Be aware that some seeds need light to germinate and should be sown on top of the soil.

The first thing you should do when planning a garden is test the soil. Pay a small fee to have your soil analyzed, and you'll be glad that you did when you understand what nutrients your soil is lacking. Before you ruin any crops, make sure you do this. Soil can be analyzed at a lot of cooperative extension offices, so make sure you plan accordingly.

You can prevent pests using other plants or natural materials. Onions and marigolds can help to deter slugs. Wood ash, when used as mulch, can help keep insects away from trees and shrubs. These are proven methods without having to use harsh chemical pesticides.

Using a shovel in clay soil is a lot of work, not only is the clay hard, but it will stick to the shovel and make it twice as hard to handle. Coat the shovel with floor or car wax, and buff it with a clean rag to make the job a lot easier. This will make your task easier because the clay won't stick to the shovel. It will also keep your garden tool from rusting.
